Judges Critique Open Show March 2015
Judge: Linda Reed
My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge their show and, of course, to those that chose to bring their dogs. I had a really enjoyable day with you. Being away from the ring for some time all of the dogs were new to me. I found 2 suspect bites and one who had a temperament that I was very suspicious of but, with this one exception the rest had temperaments you expect to see in a cocker and all, apart from a couple, wagged their lovely full tails constantly. Again, with the odd exception, presentation was good.
BIS Burns VILLASPANIOL SILK AND STEEL, RBIS Morris RIONDEL MANHATTON TRANSFER, BPIS Mitchell GLOWHILL COTTON EYED JOE & RBPIS Thomas ABERCROMBIE OF LA VIE MAGNIFIQUE FOR CLARAMAND
MINOR PUPPY DOG (4)
1 ST BPIS Mitchell GLOWHILL COTTON EYED JOE. Smart, well put together Blue. Handsome, with gentle expression, good width to muzzle giving correct head proportions. Balanced all through, well bodied, in good hard condition, well angulated hind quarters giving sound driving movement. Holding topline correctly with perfect tail carriage. Coat presented well, moved out happily.
2 ND Wyeth FENDROVE RAPPED UP. Lovely headed Black. Again, well put together giving a typical outline when stacked. Perfect presentation. Moved steady and soundly just a little apprehensive at his first show.
3 rd Spencer TROVEROTHWAY JUST IN TIME
MINOR PUPPY BITCH (9, 2 abs)
1 st Thomas HUSTONIA BRITANNIA OF CLARAMAND. Pretty, feminine Blue with good head shape and gentle expression. Confirmation ok, firm topline with true, happy movement. Correctly presented coat which, many in this class could learn from.
2 nd Linton JALANKIU FLIRTATION. Black of good make and shape. Would just have preferred a more feminine head. Movement ok.
3 rd Darcy OAKTONNE STAND FROM UNDER
PUPPY DOG (3, 1 abs)
1 st & RBPIS Thomas ABERCROMBIE OF LA VIE MAGNIFIQUE FOR CLARAMAND. Attractive light Blue giving his handler a hard time. Short, compact, well boned and good for overall type with typical head. Lovely outline for the few seconds he stood still. Just managed to keep 4 paws on the ground long enough for me to see his sound movement.
2 nd Hooper SPENDLES SPIN ON A STAR. Pleasing Blue of good type, correct in size and well prepared. Just hope he can gain some confidence.
PUPPY BITCH (8, 1 abs)
1 st Wyeth FENDROVE ORANGE CRÈME. Super Orange, so feminine with near perfect make and shape which won her the class. Correct eye colour and pigment which can often be lacking in this colour. Sound and happy on the move, with a well presented coat. Would just like a little more of her all round.
2 nd Hatton ROYALDEAN ROSALIA. This Blue was better for size and underneath her profuse coat was a soundly made bitch. Not quite as feminine as winner or so positive in front movement.
3 rd Burns GALLINAGOS EMOTION IN MOTION AT VILLASPANIOL
JUNIOR DOG (1)
1 st Simcock MANLINSON SEEDS OF JOY. Masculine headed Blue. Nice shape but a little narrow all through. Moved out happily but could be more positive in front.
JUNIOR BITCH (5, 2 abs)
1 st Matthews SONHAM SAPPHIRE BLUE. Sweet headed Blue, ok for size and shape though perhaps a little narrow. Happy and positive on the move which won her the class.
2 nd Hughes GLANTRAETH TIME TO DREAM. Blue similar in size and shape to winner but not quite as feminine in head or happy in movement.
3 RD Darcy OAKTONNE BLUES AND TWOS
MAIDEN DOG OR BITCH (2)
1 ST Burns CLARAMAND ROUGH COPY AT VILLASPANIOL. Heart melting expression on this super Gold boy. Correct angulation front and back, short well ribbed body, full coat well turned out. Considered at the end of the day but, not positive in front movement.
2 ND Linton JALANKIU FLIRTATION
NOVICE BLACK/GOLD/BLACK & TAN/LIVER DOG OR BITCH (4, 2 abs) 1 st Linton JALANKIU FLIRTATION
2 nd Clinton CLARAMAND FORGET ME NOT FOR ORAMIS. Pretty, correctly marked Black & Tan girl of correct size. Well bodied and well boned. Happy on the move but had left her best jacket at home.
NOVICE ANY OTHER COLOUR DOG OR BITCH (2, 1 abs)
1 st Simcock MANLINSON SEEDS OF JOY
YEARLING DOG (1)
1 st Matthews SONHAM BLUE DIAMOND JW. Typey Blue, pleasing in head, correct front and well angulated behind. Well ribbed in hard condition. Moved out ok.
YEARLING BITCH (3, 1 abs)
1 st Matthews SONHAM SAPPHIRE BLUE
2 nd Goodwin SARABAR SAPHALA. Up to size, correctly marked Black & Tan. Confirmation ok but would prefer a more feminine head. Sound and happy on the move but not the tail carriage of 1.
GRADUATE DOG (6, 3 abs)
1 st Marris-Bray HELENWOOD RECOGNITION. Well grown, mature, masculine Black. Pleasing head and expression. A little short in upperarm but correct hind angulation with a strong short body. Moved soundly and steadily.
2 ND Sutton BENCLEUCH BIG BANG AT SHIREPARK. Strong Blue that was just a little overdone in head for me. Good enough to handle but better trimming would improve all round picture. Movement ok.
3 rd Stapley SHIREPARK MARSHALLS MAGIC
GRADUATE BITCH (1, 1abs)
POST GRADUATE BLACK/GOLD/BLACK & TAN/LIVER DOG OR BITCH (2, 1 abs)
1 st Atkinson DREWRIMIC ALPHAMALE. Strong masculine Black boy with a profuse coat that was well presented. Good size, ok for make and shape just not positive in movement.
POST GRADUATE ANY OTHER COLOUR DOG OR BITCH (4, 1 abs)
1 st Mitchell GLOWHILL MISS SAIGON. Smart, mature Blue girl. Good head shape, short sturdy body with correct topline, angulation and bone. Moved soundly and steadily just missing that true cocker bustle.
2 nd McBride WILLIAMBRAE MULLALLO. Lighter framed Blue. Head ok, just not quite the overall shape and balance of winner. Moved ok.
3 rd Hambley TOPDAY MIDNIGHT LIGHT SPECIAL
BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOG OR BITCH (6, 2 abs)
1 st Burns BIS VILLASPANIOL SILK AND STEEL. Wow! What a super Blue girl. Has everything you want in a quality cocker, so true to breed type with sound, driving movement and correct tail carriage which never stopped wagging. Hard to fault this typical merry cocker with her correct size, near perfect confirmation and expertly presented coat.
2 nd Matthews SONHAM SAPPHIRE BLUE 3 rd Atkinson DREWRIMIC ALPHAMALE
SPECIAL NOT BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOG OR BITCH (6)
1 st Burns CLARAMAND ROUGH COPY AT VILLASPANIOL
2 nd Thomas AGLAIA’S LORD LIEUTENANT OF CLARAMAND (imp Deu). Handsome Choc & Tan boy. Good eye colour and pigment with lovely soft tan markings harmonising with brown coat. Just a few days out of puppy but well grown with good overall confirmation. Moved soundly and happily.
3 rd Marris-Bray WEIRDENE WAKE UP AT HELENWOOD JW
OPEN DOG (4)
1 st Morris RBIS RIONDEL MANHATTON TRANSFER. Good honest Blue with typical head and gentle expression. His dark colouring and markings do not do him any favours but his confirmation was spot on, well boned, short strong body with correct angulation front and rear. Moved soundly with true cocker merriment keeping level topline and correct tail carriage. Full coat nicely presented.
2 ND Marris-Bray WEIRDENE WAKE UP AT HELENWOOD JW. Black, similar in size. Sturdy boy with strong body, good hind angulation but could not match the front of winner. Well turned out with sound merry movement.
3 rd Vere ADRONA DAYDREAM RISING
OPEN BITCH (3, 1 abs)
1 st Darcy OAKTONNE BLUES AND TWOS. Promising Blue pup. Has all the essentials to develop into a typy girl. Sound moving with level topline and good tail carriage. Owner just needs to get to grips with trimming to show her shape to advantage.
2 ND Hambley TOPDAY BLUE PEARL. Mature Blue but not so feminine in head. Generally confirmation ok but not happy on the move.
VETERAN DOG OR BITCH (5, 2 abs)
1 st Marris-Bray SH CH HELENWOOD CRYSTAL MAZE. Well known Blue girl. Typy, good all round example of the breed. Moved true both ways. Would like to see her carry just a little more weight.
2 ND Clinton CLARAMAND CILLA BLACK FOR ORAMISS. Black, smaller in size but still a good bitch. Confirmation ok. Movement ok but, carrying perhaps just a little too much weight.
3 rd Oakes & Kita-Oakes JALANKIU ODD JOB
